I live in Habana, and to break the ice between us, here are some personal facts about me. Some things that I enjoy are dancing (especially Salsa, which fascinates me), reading a good book whenever I can get my hands on one, movies (especially thrillers and suspense movies), and I am completely addicted to my son, who is 10 years old.
Now that we know ourselves just a little bit better, I can tell you that we had one week full of events, the country was getting ready to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Fidel, and I really believe that it has been done with much success. There was one magnificent musical activity, with representatives of several countries of America, call "Todas las voces, todas" that continued almost until dawn, and a large parade in Revolution Plaza the Sabado in the morning.
Well, I'm looking forward to writing to you again, and as always I will attempt to keep you updated with new events, and write more articles (albeit small ones), but will try to maintain our mutual window of communication always open.

There was one magnificent musical activity, with representatives of several countries of America, call "Todas las voces, todas" that continued almost until dawn, and a large parade in Revolution Plaza the Sabado in the morning.

Well, I'm looking forward to writing to you again, and as always I will attempt to keep you updated with new events, and write more articles (albeit small ones), but will try to maintain our mutual window of communication always open.

Mi nombre es Ibis, vivo en la Habana, y para romper el hielo entre nosotros, les hare algunas confidencias personales, como mis gustos predilectos, que son bailar, sobre todo salsa (esto es algo que me fascina), la lectura de buenos libros, (siempre que los consigo) cuando no lo logro, pues leo cualquiera, las peliculas, sobre todo los suspensos, y soy muy adicta a mi pequeño hijo, que tiene 10 años.
Ahora que nos conocemos un poquito mejor, les dire que tuvimos una semana plena de acontecimientos, el pais ha estado en funcion de celebrar el 80 aniversario de Fidel, y realmente creo que lo ha logrado con exito. Hubo una magnifica actividad musical, con representantes de varios paises de America, llamado "Todas las voces, todas" que finalizó casi al amanecer, y un multitudinario desfile en la Plaza de la Revolución el Sabado en la mañana. Hemos estado a la espectativa de las actividades y ha sido conmovedor.
Bien, planificando un proximo encuentro con ustedes, por lo que siempre los tendré en cuenta para contarle nuevos acontecimientos, (aunque sean pequeños) pero intentando mantener siempre abierta la ventana de la comunicacion entrenosotros. Hasta la proxima.

Cuando digo ¨ privilegios ¨ muchos piensan en como se pueden doblar las leyes a favor del ciudadano o tal vez del conocimiento que puedan tener estos de sus derechos a cabalidad, pero no ; me refiero a los derechos más elementales que en nuestro suelo se han convertido en nada más que sueños.
Como puede ser posible que yo como ciudadano cubano no pueda comprar un auto ó alquilar una habitación de hotel. Como es posible que viviendo en Cuba no pueda visitar mis cayos y algunas playas. Como puedo entender que se me acose cuando entro al lobby de un hotel por mi condición de ciudadano cubano.
Mil veces me he preguntado por qué? . La culpa dicen es del Bloqueo. No puedo alquilarme en el hotel por el bloqueo, no puedo comprar el auto por el bloqueo, no puedo viajar al exterior por el bloqueo, no puedo tener un teléfono móvil por el bloqueo, no puedo tener Internet por el bloqueo. Pero que distintas son las cosas cuando eres extranjero en Cuba, si quieres un auto, el bloqueo te lo ofrece, así también el bloqueo te ofrece las playas ,los cayos y los hoteles. En fin ,el cubano es extranjero en su país y el extranjero se vuelve ciudadano al pisar tierra cubana, es la contradicción implícita en la ¨ filosofía del bloqueo ¨ que solo es comprendida por algunos ¨funcionarios iluminados¨.

When I say ¨privileges¨ many think about things like "how can the law be bent" to favor the citizen, or perhaps of the knowledge of how to stretch laws to cheat the rules of society, but no; I talk about rights more elementary than that.
For example, how can it be possible that I, as a Cuban citizen, cannot buy a car or rent a hotel room? Or that living in Cuba I cannot visit certain of our beautiful keys and beaches... or how to understand that I am harassed as I enter the lobby of a certain hotel just because I am a Cuban citizen.

But the difference is that if you are a foreigner in Cuba, if you want a car, the embargo offers it to you, thus also the embargo offers beaches, the keys and the hotels to you. It is an implicit contradiction of the "idea of the embargo". that only is understood by some ¨illuminated civil servants¨...

Cojímar, pueblo de pescadores ya no más, mezcla de culturas y credos, muestra perfecta del sincretismo de razas. Este pequeño pueblito que no solo albergó en su seno a grandes figuras de la intelectualidad cubana contemporánea, sino que también fue preferido por uno de los grandes de la literatura norteamericana, Ernest Hemingway se ha convertido en prueba irrefutable de la existencia de clases sociales en la ¨Cuba Socialista¨.
Cuantas irresoluciones, cuantas dubitaciones no se les presentan a nuestros jóvenes a la hora de decidir el camino correcto a elegir en la vida. Será Espíritu ó Materia, Instrucción no remunerada ó Bienestar en la Ignorancia. Intelectuales VS Obreros, .. Qué es lo mejor para mi? . Créanme mis queridos lectores difícil es esta decisión cuando el panorama que se presenta ante ti no puede ser razonado ni absorbido por la mente en manera alguna. Como saber que es lo correcto si el Herrero que te hizo las ventanas tiene un nivel de vida superior al de tu madre Médico. Si ves que hasta el Ingeniero Civil de al doblar la esquina está vendiendo ¨Pizzas y Refresco¨ porque le resulta N veces más rentable.
No juzgue a los jóvenes cubanos por tomar una decisión de la cual solo pueden ver el resultado a corto plazo, cuando es el gobierno mismo quien los pone en la encrucijada. Escoger la pastilla azul o la roja. Que haría usted?

Whichever doubts, whichever options there are in life are not necessarily always taught to our young people when the time comes to decide the correct way to live their lives. There are not always many choices... to be spiritual or materialistic, a poor intellectual or blissful worker in ignorance. Which is best for me?
Believe me, dear reader, this is a difficult decision when the panorama which appears before you is one which cannot be reasoned with, nor difficult is this decision when the panorama that appears before you cannot be reasoned with nor understood by your mind in any way. Like trying to understand that it is right that the metal worker who occasionally cleans your windows can have a higher standard of living than your mother who is a doctor. Or seeing that the civil engineer at the corner is selling ¨Pizzas and Refresco¨ because it is much more profitable to him, many times over.

Sin embargo, el objetivo aquí no es convertirnos en una voz para una ideología u otra, sino intentar proporcionar una ojeada a las realidades diarias de la vida del cubano.
Ahora daré la palabra a nuestros autores, que no son autores profesionales, sino gente regular como tú y yo, que están viviendo en Cuba. The goal of AhoraCuba! is to provide an outlet for news and views from within Cuba, by ordinary Cubans. All blog posts (except this one...) here are written from Cuba. We're hoping we can grow this site into a resource for those who are looking for unbiased, sincere information on Cuba.
Ideally, we want this site to remain as apolitical as possible – this is nearly impossible, of course, as almost all topics in Cuba can be traced back to politics... la “monotema”, they call it. Nevertheless, our goal here is not to become a mouthpiece for one ideology or another, but to try and provide a glimpse into the daily realities of Cuban life, and all the good and bad which it entails.
That being said, I'll now turn things over to our authors, who are professional authors, but regular people like you and me, who happen to be living in Cuba.
We welcome your comments on any of our posts, though responding to them might take longer than you're used to. Also, since we're striving to keep as clear of politics as we can, please try and keep your comments relevant to the post on question, without diving into the political subcontext that enshrouds it.
